The Eswatini College of Technology is calling on businesses to play a greater role in training graduates to reduce the gap between taught skills and labour market needs. Its principal Sicelo Kunene made the proposal at a meeting in Manzini, according to Times of Eswatini.

Eswatini College of Technology (ECOT) principal Sicelo Kunene called on businesses to participate directly in training graduates to better align qualifications with labour market needs. He was speaking at the institution’s first Lutsi Graduation Indaba, ahead of its graduation and certificate award ceremony scheduled for Friday.

Kunene proposed that businesses contribute to curriculum development, identifying skills in demand, internships and the creation of employment opportunities. ECOT provides training in engineering, construction, information and communications technology, automotive studies, hospitality and business, among other fields.

The institution is also developing digital tools with its students, including a website, a server, a student tracking application and an admissions and registration application. Its artificial intelligence unit is also seeking to position ECOT in emerging technologies, with support from businesses and the government.
