The African National Congress is credited with 31% of the vote after 90% of ballots were counted in South Africa’s municipal elections. This is its lowest electoral result, with final results expected on Sunday, according to the South African electoral authority’s dashboard.
After 90% of ballots had been counted in South Africa’s municipal elections, the African National Congress (ANC) had just over 31% of the vote, according to the electoral commission’s results. The party remained in first place, ahead of the Democratic Alliance (DA), which had more than 24%.
The score is below the 40% won by the ANC in the 2024 national elections and the 46% in the 2021 municipal elections. The ANC won nearly 70% in the 2004 national elections. Final results were expected on Sunday, according to the electoral commission.
Political analyst Daniel Silke told AFP that the result was the worst in the ANC’s history and could reduce its ability to exercise authority at local and national levels. Nomvula Mokonyane, an ANC representative, said the result gave the party an opportunity to renew itself.
