Eswatini’s Commission on Human Rights and Public Administration Integrity has criticised conditions for young people applying to join the police, with some waiting in long queues exposed to the weather. In an advisory published on Tuesday, it recommended allowing applications online or at local centres, according to the commission.

Eswatini’s Commission on Human Rights and Public Administration Integrity recommends diversifying how applications for police jobs can be submitted, after identifying nine problems with the ongoing recruitment, the Times of Eswatini reports. In an advisory published on 3 November, it proposed online applications or submissions at tinkhundla centres or police stations, rather than requiring applicants to apply in person only at regional offices.

The commission said hundreds of young people had waited in long queues exposed to the weather to apply for a limited number of second-class constable posts. Recruitment began on 2 November and is due to end on 4 November. Applicants must submit their documents between 8 am and 4 pm at the regional headquarters in Hhohho, Manzini, Shiselweni and Lubombo.

In Mbabane, the queue stretched for about 500 metres on the first day, according to the newspaper. Some candidates had arrived as early as 4 am, while others had spent the night there. In Nhlangano, applicants waited in the rain and thunderstorms.
