Nigerian Vice-President Kashim Shettima accuses Atiku Abubakar of wanting to restore fuel subsidies and questions his ability to manage a modern economy. He says such a policy would plunge Nigeria back into poverty and urges voters to examine candidates’ proposals and abilities, according to his remarks in Abuja.
Nigerian Vice-President Kashim Shettima has questioned former vice-president Atiku Abubakar’s ability to manage Nigeria’s economy because of his support for restoring the fuel subsidy. Speaking on Monday at the Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja, Shettima said the proposal would lead the country back into poverty and accused Atiku of supporting it for political reasons.
Shettima also criticised Atiku’s vocational training, who studied at the Kano School of Hygiene. He questioned his ability to manage a modern economy and his knowledge of environmental sanitation, referring in particular to the distinction between flu and Ebola. He called on Nigerians to assess politicians’ proposals and qualifications.
The removal of the fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu’s government in May 2023 remains a point of disagreement between the administration and the opposition. The government defends the measure as a way to reduce pressure on public finances, while rising fuel prices have contributed to the higher cost of living. Shettima had already rejected the restoration of subsidies, in a position reported on 26 October.
