Denis Sassou-N’Guesso on 6 November called on UN member states, companies and partners to turn the United Nations Decade for Afforestation and Reforestation 2027-2036 into funded and measurable programmes. The call was made in Brazzaville during National Tree Day, according to ACI.

Congolese President Denis Sassou-N’Guesso on Friday 6 November in Brazzaville called on UN member states, international organisations, companies and technical partners to turn the United Nations Decade for Afforestation and Reforestation 2027-2036 into concrete programmes, accessible funding and measurable results, ACI reports. He was speaking during National Tree Day, marked by the launch of the national mobilisation in support of the decade.

The initiative aims to reverse forest loss, increase forest cover, develop forest and agroforestry plantations, preserve biodiversity and promote new green economic activities, according to Denis Sassou-N’Guesso. The Congolese president notably cited the restoration of degraded and eroded land, the search for sustainable alternatives to firewood and the creation of income for local populations.

Sassou-N’Guesso also called for young people to be placed at the heart of the transition to a green economy, by giving them skills and employment opportunities. He recalled that the UN resolution establishing the decade had been adopted on 16 April 2025, according to ACI.

The call comes after the announcement on 1 November of Congo-Brazzaville’s project to plant 200,000 trees. The country had then planned 200,000 tree plantings as part of its reforestation efforts.
