Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid’s Belgian goalkeeper, will not play in Sunday’s Clásico against FC Barcelona on 25 October because of a flu-like syndrome, the Madrid club announced. The match is part of the 10th round of La Liga.
Young Ukrainian goalkeeper Illia Voloshyn has joined the squad, while Andriy Lunin is expected to replace Courtois in goal. Lunin had already deputised during a lengthy absence for the Belgian and helped Real Madrid to their victorious 2023-2024 Champions League campaign.
Real Madrid are third in La Liga with 21 points, compared with 27 for league leaders FC Barcelona. The Catalan club therefore have a six-point lead over their rivals before the match.
Courtois’s absence comes a day after José Mourinho’s announcements about the Clásico and Kylian Mbappé’s call-up for the match. Mbappé’s call-up for the Clásico was published on 24 October, before the French striker expressed his desire to end Barça’s run.
