Polish President Karol Nawrocki ordered police to lift the blockade around the Constitutional Tribunal imposed by Donald Tusk’s government. He urgently summoned representatives of parliamentary groups in an attempt to stabilise the situation, Polish news agency PAP reports.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki ordered the police deployed around the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw to withdraw, saying that Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government had violated the constitutional order. He called for the ‘restoration of the rule of law’ and the departure of security forces stationed around the court, according to Polish news agency PAP.
Nawrocki also urgently summoned representatives of the parliamentary groups in an effort to stabilise the political situation. The crisis pits the nationalist right against the centrist government over the appointment of members of the Constitutional Tribunal, after several hours of tensions around the building.
The nationalist president cut short an official visit to Senegal and returned to Warsaw. He held talks at the presidential palace with Zbigniew Kapinski, the first president of the Supreme Court, before going to the Constitutional Tribunal, which was surrounded by protesters and police officers equipped with shields and helmets.
The decision came after the Polish president returned to Warsaw, announced on 30 October, followed by the meeting of parties convened by Karol Nawrocki, published on 31 October after a constitutional judge was suspended.
