Trump promises Americans $5,000 after midterms

Donald Trump reaffirmed that he would pay $5,000 to every citizen if Republicans won the US midterm elections. The US president also acknowledged that a head of state generally loses these elections, as polls worry his camp, Agence France-Presse reports.

US President Donald Trump has promised to pay $5,000 to every citizen if Republicans win Tuesday’s midterm elections, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports. He also said on Friday that his party had ‘a chance’ of winning, as polls and tensions within the Republican camp fuel concerns about its performance.

At a rally in Daytona, Florida, Trump justified his events by saying he wanted to prevent Democrats from taking control of Congress. Democrats hope to retake the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate, the two chambers of the federal parliament, and gain governorships.

All House seats and about one-third of Senate seats are being contested. By midday on 30 October, 47.9 million Americans had already voted early, a record according to AFP. The payment promise has raised questions about its legality and funding.

Trump’s approval rating is at its lowest, AFP reports. Voters particularly blame him for the high cost of living and the launch of the war in Iran. The president acknowledged that a head of state generally loses midterm elections, regardless of their party.

Trump’s campaign also continued with rallies, notably in Kansas and Iowa, after they resumed on 30 October. Pope Leo XIV, for his part, voted by mail in the US midterm elections.
