Donald Trump reinstated two campaign rallies in Kansas and Iowa on Sunday, two days before the US midterm elections, after cancelling the trips on Thursday, a Republican source cited by AFP said on Friday. The US president is due to travel to Salina, Kansas, then Dubuque, Iowa, in addition to taking part in nearly 20 telephone rallies.
The cancellations had fuelled questions about the health and stamina of 80-year-old Donald Trump. The president responded that he felt “perfect” and said Republican Senator Roger Marshall was doing very well in Kansas, where he is facing Democrat Adam Hamilton. In Iowa, Republican Representative Ashley Hinson is facing Democrat Josh Turek.
The two states voted overwhelmingly for Donald Trump in 2024, but have become contested in the battle for control of the Senate. Republicans are defending a 53-seat majority against 47, while Democrats are seeking to capture at least one chamber of Congress. The reinstatement of the rallies comes after the cancellation of two trips announced on 30 October, in a previous campaign report.
