The UN will maintain its support for Somalia after the closure of its temporary UNTMIS mission, Secretary-General António Guterres has announced. The organisation will continue to operate through its agencies, funds and programmes, in cooperation with the Somali government, the African Union and international partners, according to Shabelle Media Network.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has assured that the organisation will continue supporting Somalia after the end of the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), scheduled for 31 October. The UN will continue to operate through its agencies, funds and programmes present in the country, according to Shabelle Media Network, which cited a statement by Guterres.
Guterres said the UN would work with Somalia’s federal government, the African Union and other international partners to support peace, stability, human rights and sustainable development. He also called on the international community to maintain its aid to promote inclusive political dialogue, reconciliation and the strengthening of public institutions, as Somalia continues to face political, security and humanitarian challenges, Shabelle Media Network reports.
The secretary-general praised Somalia’s progress and the resilience of its people. He also paid tribute to UNTMIS staff and those of previous UN missions, including personnel who died while working to support peace in the country, according to the same outlet.
