Uganda has sent its 48th battle group, made up of soldiers from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), to Somalia to join the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The deployment followed training at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre in Singo, Nakaseke District, Shabelle Media Network reports.
Major General Felix Busizoori, Uganda’s Deputy Commander Land Force, urged the contingent to prioritise teamwork, discipline and good relations with local communities. He also warned soldiers that unauthorised use of social media, which could compromise operational security, was punishable within the army.
Colonel Moses Nabaasa, the training centre’s commander, urged the soldiers to uphold the values of military service, including patriotism and pan-Africanism. The deployment comes as 109 Ugandan soldiers leave Somalia on 30 October as part of the rotation of forces deployed in the country.
