Three officials from Itasy University in Soavinandriana have been placed in pre-trial detention and two others placed under judicial supervision in a case involving alleged forged diplomas. The five suspects were brought before an investigating judge after being referred to the Anti-Corruption Pole (PAC), according to the public prosecutor’s office.
Those facing prosecution include the university’s former president, the director of the Higher School of Engineering, the general coordinator, the director of accounting and the director of administration, finance and general affairs. The investigation by the Independent Anti-Corruption Bureau (Bianco) concerns bachelor’s and master’s degrees that were allegedly used to justify administrative appointments. According to the PAC, some of these documents were allegedly issued by the director of administration, finance and general affairs, who is himself being prosecuted for forgery and use of forged documents, abuse of office, complicity and obtaining undue benefits.
The former head of the institution, the director of the Higher School of Engineering and an administrative and financial official are being detained, while the two other suspects remain free under judicial supervision. The public prosecutor’s office said investigations were continuing to determine the extent of the alleged irregularities. The proceedings follow the prosecution of 1,638 people by Bianco, announced on 29 October in Madagascar.
