Paraguay’s Congress has begun considering proceedings to impeach President Santiago Peña after digital lender ueno collapsed. Lawmakers accuse him of conflicts of interest, misusing pension funds and institutional cover-ups; a two-thirds majority is required, according to Reuters.
Paraguay’s Congress began proceedings on Thursday to impeach President Santiago Peña after digital lender ueno collapsed, preventing millions of customers from accessing their accounts and triggering protests, Reuters reports. Thirty-five lawmakers filed articles of impeachment in the lower house, which has 80 seats.
Lawmakers accuse Santiago Peña of conflicts of interest, misappropriation of pension funds and institutional cover-ups linked to ueno’s collapse. The Paraguayan president held shares in the group that controlled the institution until last year.
Launching the proceedings requires the support of two-thirds of lawmakers taking part in the session. Congress president Basilio Núñez and Colorado Party leader Horacio Cartes withdrew their support for Santiago Peña on Thursday, further reducing his backing ahead of the vote.
