The Somali federal government is distributing Hormuud operator cards to military personnel under its authority in Puntland to pay their salaries directly. The initiative comes after Puntland refused to channel these payments through its private banks, reigniting tensions between the two administrations, reports Puntland Post.

The Somali federal government has distributed Hormuud operator SIM cards to soldiers under its command and stationed in Puntland’s regions, in order to pay their salaries directly. The measure comes after Puntland refused last month to channel the pay of these military personnel through the region’s private banks, reports Puntland Post.

The direct payment through Hormuud comes amid persistent tensions between Mogadishu and Puntland over control of the federal forces present in the region. Puntland had said several months earlier that it had ended the presence on its territory of soldiers under the federal government’s authority, according to Puntland Post.
