Nigeria’s National Blood Service Agency centres collected only 24,000 to 25,000 units in 2025, while the population’s needs far exceed that volume. The agency estimates that at least 2% of residents must donate blood voluntarily to improve supplies and transfusions, according to Tribune Online.

Nigeria’s National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) collected between 24,000 and 25,000 units of blood in 2025, a volume deemed insufficient to meet the needs of a population of more than 200 million, according to its director general, Saleh Yuguda, quoted by Tribune Online.

The NBSA estimates that at least 2% of the population should donate blood to improve availability and access to transfusions. The agency is setting up a national digital system to track every unit, from collection to use, and trace its journey from donor to recipient. Aliyu Dahiru Waziri, head of the NBSA’s operations centre, also said the agency was strengthening its checks to improve blood safety and traceability.
