The Mozambican government plans to mobilise about 27 billion meticais, or 1.7 billion dollars, for its 2026-2027 national plan against the effects of El Niño. The programme is expected to support more than one million people through agricultural kits, water infrastructure and strengthened health surveillance, according to Prime Minister Benvinda Levi.

The Mozambican government plans to mobilise approximately 27 billion meticais, or 1.7 billion dollars, for its 2026-2027 national plan to mitigate the effects of the El Niño weather phenomenon. The funding will cover agriculture, health, education, water supply, food assistance and social protection, according to Prime Minister Benvinda Levi, who was speaking on Wednesday before the Assembly of the Republic.

The plan is notably intended to distribute agricultural kits to more than 185,000 households and build multi-purpose silos, small-scale irrigation systems, dams and boreholes. These measures are expected to benefit more than one million people, according to Benvinda Levi.

Forecasts point to normal rainfall in the northern provinces of Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Niassa, but a risk of severe drought in 76 districts of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala, Manica and Tete. The government plans to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and medicine stocks, particularly oral rehydration salts, cholera kits, antimalarial drugs and rapid diagnostic tests.

Benvinda Levi also announced the construction of 425 community health posts over the next five years. Regarding national road number 1 (EN1), she said that 342 kilometres had undergone maintenance and improvement works between 2015 and 2025, while a tender had been launched to award the Marracuene-Xai-Xai section to a private partner.
