The World Food Programme and the Democratic Republic of the Congo Social Fund have signed a $6.6 million agreement to support 3,000 households in Uvira, South Kivu. Funded by the African Development Bank, the aid is to improve their food supplies, incomes and production capacity, according to Beto.

The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Social Fund of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have signed a $6.6 million partnership agreement to support 3,000 households in Uvira territory, in South Kivu. Funded by the African Development Bank, the assistance will target displaced families, women heads of households and young people in particular, according to Beto.

The programme is intended to enable beneficiaries to produce their own food, increase their incomes and improve their diets. The DRC Social Fund will be the implementing agency, as it was for the Eastern Population Crisis Response Support Project (PRECAPE), launched on 29 October for Beni, Walikale and Uvira, according to Beto.

The agreement comes in a province that had at least 209,000 displaced people across six territories in September, as well as 14,115 cholera cases and 245 deaths, according to OCHA’s tenth situation report. In the third quarter, the British embassy recorded a further 500,000 people in the food emergency phase in eastern DRC and 277,461 households affected by displacement.
