Gabon has signed agreements with SEFE, an energy company owned by the German state, to market around six million tonnes of carbon credits from preserving its forests. First deliveries are expected by the first quarter of 2027 at the latest, while revenues await the national regulatory framework, according to the Gabonese presidency.
Gabon will market around six million tonnes of jurisdictional carbon credits from the preservation of its forests with SEFE, the energy company owned by the German state. The agreements were signed on Tuesday 3 November by the Gabonese Republic, represented by the Gabonese Agency for the Development of the Green Economy (AGADEV), and the German government, according to a statement from the presidency read by its spokesperson, Théophane Nzame-Nze Biyoghe.
Gabon thus becomes the first African country to market credits eligible for the CORSIA programme, the international scheme for offsetting emissions from the aviation sector. The first deliveries are expected by the first quarter of 2027 at the latest, with verification and traceability mechanisms intended to guarantee the environmental integrity of the credits, Théophane Nzame-Nze Biyoghe said.
Revenues accruing to the state will be ring-fenced until the national regulatory framework comes into force. It must provide for benefit-sharing with communities. The presidency specified that ownership and management of the forests would remain in the hands of the Gabonese state.
