Brikama Area Council has awarded scholarships to more than 1,000 students since launching its programme in 2024, including 900 beneficiaries this year. Chairman Yankuba Darboe promises to extend the aid to Kanifing if the UDP wins the 5 December presidential election, according to Kerr Fatou.

More than 1,000 students have benefited since 2024 from the scholarship programme of the Brikama Area Council, a Gambian local authority led by Yankuba Darboe, he said at an UDP political meeting in Dippa Kunda, according to Kerr Fatou.

The programme supported about 300 students in 2024, at a cost of 3 million dalasis, before rising to 600 beneficiaries in its second year and 900 this year. The council currently covers tuition fees for 187 students at the University of The Gambia, at a cost of 6 million dalasis this year, according to Yankuba Darboe.

The chairman of the Brikama Area Council said the scheme could be extended to Dippa Kunda and Kanifing Municipality if Ousainu Darboe, leader of Gambia’s UDP, wins the 5 December presidential election. He presented education and vocational training as ways to reduce social and economic difficulties and combat irregular migration, reports Kerr Fatou.

The proposal comes as Ousainu Darboe has already promised to combat tribalism in Gambia, as part of the UDP’s campaign for the December presidential election.
