Manchester United is considering Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann to replace Michael Carrick if the manager is sacked after the club’s poor start to the season. Unai Emery is also highly regarded, but his Aston Villa contract could complicate an appointment, according to several sources cited by BBC Sport.
Manchester United is considering Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann as potential successors to Michael Carrick if the Englishman is dismissed. BBC Sport reports that the two managers are among those being considered by the club and have been made aware of its interest.
Howe, formerly Newcastle manager, is said to be open to a move to Manchester United. He left the club in summer 2026 after leading it to a League Cup victory in 2025 and two Champions League qualifications in five years. Nagelsmann is also available after leaving his post as Germany manager following the World Cup.
The club also rates Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, but his contract would complicate a possible approach. Antonio Conte, who has been without a club since leaving Napoli in June and is interested in the job, is also among the candidates. If Carrick is sacked, Manchester United would appoint its eighth permanent or head coach since Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.
The search comes after a 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford on 25 October and a run of eight Premier League matches without a win. Carrick had also remained in contact with Alex Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjær, according to reports published the same day on his conversations with the two former managers.
