Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga by beating Freiburg 3-1 away, with goals from Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry among the scorers. Coach Vincent Kompany remains in hospital with an unidentified virus, but his condition is stable, according to club sporting director Max Eberl.
Bayern Munich beat Freiburg 3-1 on Sunday to reclaim top spot in the German football league, the Bundesliga, ahead of Borussia Dortmund, according to Vanguard. Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry scored in the first half, before Michael Olise sealed the victory in stoppage time.
Freiburg pulled a goal back and were looking for an equaliser when their goalkeeper, Mio Backhaus, found himself too far forward. Olise took advantage of his position to score the third goal into the empty net. Harry Kane did not score, despite a close-range effort that was saved in the second half.
Bayern played the match without several first-choice players, including their goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer, as well as Luis Díaz, Jamal Musiala, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Kim Min-jae. Joshua Kimmich was also absent after the sudden death of his father. Vincent Kompany, the coach who was hospitalised after collapsing at training on Friday, remained unavailable. Bayern said on Saturday that he was expected to be out for “a few days, not weeks”.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks, who led the team in Freiburg, told DAZN that Kompany had sent him a message of congratulations. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the coach was stable and undergoing tests, with no definitive diagnosis. Bayern are due to face Dortmund in Munich next week.
