Gabon’s High Authority for Communication has lifted the suspension of social media, imposed since 17 February. After discussions with TikTok, Meta and YouTube and the introduction of reporting mechanisms, the regulator called on users to act responsibly, according to its statement.

Gabon’s media regulator, the High Authority for Communication (HAC), lifted on Saturday the suspension of social media, which had been in place since 17 February, according to a statement from the institution. The decision was taken at an extraordinary plenary session chaired by its president, Germain Ngoyo Moussavou.

The HAC said it had held discussions with TikTok, Meta and YouTube and set up reporting mechanisms to facilitate the removal of illegal content. It suspended the platforms in February over posts deemed defamatory, hateful or insulting, which it said could threaten social cohesion and national security. The authority called on users to act responsibly online.

The lifting of the suspension follows the restoration of access announced by the HAC on 24 October (access to social media). On 25 October, another article reported that access was being restored alongside a requirement to identify users (social media and identification).
