Clashes broke out in Rome on Saturday between protesters and law enforcement after an attempt to march towards the offices of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Protesters threw bottles, explosive devices and fireworks at a police barricade near Santa Susanna Square, while police used water cannon and, in some places, batons, Bamada.net reports.
The mobilisation began with several gatherings in the capital, including a march organised by left-wing organisations and students against “war and imperialism”. The procession ended peacefully, but young people who had left the demonstration continued an unauthorised march around the Colosseum. A group also entered the ancient amphitheatre to chant slogans.
Tensions temporarily eased after the students changed their route, before resuming when explosive devices were thrown at law enforcement officers. One protester was seen with a bloody head after being struck by an object. According to Italian media cited by Bamada.net, 28 people had been detained as a preventive measure on Saturday morning before the demonstrations.
