Lesotho has unveiled the company tasked with building a bridge over the Senqu River at Tebellong, a project intended to make crossings safer in the mountainous area. The work is due to take 24 months, while a separate project will surface eight kilometres of road towards Thamathu, the Sunday Express reports.

The Lesotho government has unveiled the company tasked with building a bridge across the Senqu River at Tebellong, in Qacha’s Nek district. The work, awarded to Unik Construction, is expected to take 24 months, the Sunday Express reports. Zutari will supervise the project, which will also include an access road between the main road and the village.

The bridge is intended to reduce the risks faced by residents crossing the river, where several people have lost their lives over the years. The Minister of Public Works and Transport, Matjato Moteane, said the government had invested more than 3 billion maloti in the district over the past four years.

The government has also launched a separate project to surface eight kilometres of road between Sehlabathebe and Thamathu. The work is expected to take 18 months and improve access to essential services and tourist sites, according to the Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Stephen Mputi. Information on recruitment for the bridge project is to be published the week after the ceremony, announced Tšepang Koele, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

The bridge adds to infrastructure and development projects in the district. A study published on 6 October examined the water quality of the Senqu basin.
