Ethiopia supports an approach combining development, humanitarian aid and resilience in response to the links between migration, forced displacement and climate change. In Geneva, Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew Daka called for funding national initiatives and livelihoods, according to Fanamc, during the 39th session of the International Organization for Migration.
Ethiopia has called for an integrated response to migration, forced displacement and climate change, based on development, international cooperation and sustainable financing. Ethiopia’s ambassador in Geneva, Tsegab Kebebew Daka, presented this position during the 39th session of the Standing Committee on Programmes and Finance of the International Organization for Migration, held on 29 and 30 October 2026, according to the Fanamc agency.
Addis Ababa called for sustainable investment in nationally led initiatives to address immediate humanitarian needs while tackling the causes of displacement and supporting long-term development. The ambassador also highlighted anticipatory action, income opportunities and communities’ resilience to the effects of climate change.
Ethiopia, which presents itself as a country of origin, transit and destination for migrants, stressed the need for political and institutional reforms to improve migration governance. It also called for effective partnerships, predictable and diversified financing, as well as international responsibility-sharing.
Ethiopia’s position comes at a time when the country is also seeking to strengthen its sectoral cooperation, notably after the announcement of 257 million mobile money accounts on 21 October 2026.
