Ethiopia supplies more than 86% of the water entering the Nile Basin system, Michael Mehari, an adviser to Ethiopia’s Minister of Water and Energy, said, according to the ministry. He was speaking at the third Ethiopian Water and Energy Week, devoted to science-based policies and partnerships for water and energy security.
Michael Mehari called for integrated water resource management and cross-border governance based on cooperation, equity and fair use of shared waters. He also advocated developing multipurpose storage facilities to support both irrigation and electricity generation.
The adviser stressed that soil conservation, watershed protection and ecosystem preservation in the upper Nile Basin have effects beyond Ethiopia’s borders, particularly for downstream countries. He finally called for increased investment and stronger capacity among local companies in the water and energy sectors.
