Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the launch in Addis Ababa of 26 city buses running on natural gas, with public transport fares cut by half. The government expects 400 more buses to arrive soon, while the prime minister says the conversion should reduce spending on imported fuel.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on 30 October the launch in Addis Ababa of 26 city buses converted to run on natural gas. According to a message he posted on social media, the transition is intended to halve public transport fares and reduce spending on fuel imports.
The vehicles were converted locally after several months of work to bring natural gas produced in Ethiopia to the capital and install refuelling stations there. Abiy Ahmed described the achievement as a sign of the development of national technical skills and technology transfer.
The head of government also announced that 400 more natural-gas-powered buses would arrive soon. The measure is part of Ethiopia’s efforts to reduce its reliance on conventional fuels in public transport.
