Ethiopia is extending its conversion to natural gas to taxis, after urban buses, to reduce fuel and transport costs. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed wants to replace imported fuels with locally produced energy, he said in Addis Ababa, according to Fanamc.

Ethiopia has begun converting taxis to natural gas, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced in Addis Ababa on Friday 30 October, according to the FMC news agency. The programme extends to the taxi sector the transition already under way for urban buses.

Abiy Ahmed said the fuel could reduce taxi operating costs and help make journeys more affordable. The government wants to replace some imported conventional fuels with gas produced in the country.

The Prime Minister also stressed the need to develop distribution networks and technical capacity to transport the gas and use it safely in vehicles. The conversion of buses announced the previous day provides for 26 vehicles to be put into service and fares to be halved, according to the announcement on gas buses.
