Nigerian pastor Enoch Adeboye says a photograph showing him holding a placard was taken during a 2020 prayer walk against insecurity and killings, not a protest against former president Goodluck Jonathan. P.M. News and Daily Post report that the image was wrongly linked to Jonathan’s presidency, which ended in 2015.
Enoch Adeboye, general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, said on Sunday, during his Church’s November thanksgiving service, that the photograph showing him with a placard had been taken during a prayer walk in 2020, and not during a protest against Goodluck Jonathan, according to P.M. News and Daily Post.
The walk followed a directive from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), whose president had called on churches to observe three days of fasting and prayer, and then organise walks around their places of worship. Adeboye took part in it in Ebute Metta, Lagos, to pray against insecurity and killings, P.M. News reports.
In a video cited by Daily Post that went viral, the pastor said his critics had called him a “wicked man” after the photograph was circulated. He acknowledged carrying a placard, while insisting that the image had wrongly been associated with 2015: Jonathan left the presidency that year, while the walk took place in 2020, during Muhammadu Buhari’s second term.
