Cyclone Murasu is due to hit the coast of Andhra Pradesh, India, overnight on 2-3 November, with gusts of up to 120 km/h, according to the India Meteorological Department. Heavy rain is expected in areas already hit by Cyclone Arnab, which killed at least three people the previous week, AFP reports.

Cyclone Murasu is due to hit the coast of Andhra Pradesh, in eastern India, around midnight on Monday or in the early hours of Tuesday, with winds of 100 to 110 km/h and gusts that could reach 120 km/h, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The system is expected to bring heavy rain to Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Tamil Nadu state. It is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Narsapur, near the town of Ongole, according to the IMD.

Murasu is expected to be less powerful than Cyclone Arnab, which hit the Andhra Pradesh coast last Wednesday and killed at least three people. Weather authorities warn that the winds could damage thatched houses, tear off roofs, uproot trees and affect standing crops, plantations and orchards. The cyclone season is being strengthened by the El Niño phenomenon, which alters wind, pressure and rainfall patterns worldwide, according to the IMD.
