A public online vote named Cristiano Ronaldo the best Ballon d’Or winner of all time for his 2008 season at Manchester United, under the symbolic title of “BOAT”, standing for “Ballon d’Or of all time”. The Portuguese player was chosen from among ten players who had won the France Football award at least twice, L’essentiel reports.
The vote, with each SMS costing one euro, included 5,009 participants who voted several times. Of these, 300 voted between five and nine times, while 44 voted between ten and 26 times, according to the Luxembourg media outlet.

In the public ranking, his 2008 season came ahead of Lionel Messi’s 2012 season and his own 2017 season. The selection also included Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff, Alfredo Di Stefano, Kevin Keegan, Michel Platini, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Marco van Basten, according to the media outlet.
