CNews and FranceInfo air Tirana footage as Paris scenes

CNews and FranceInfo broadcast footage of demonstrations in Tirana as if it showed scenes filmed in Paris. The two French channels acknowledged a control-room error and apologised, L’essentiel reports.

CNews and FranceInfo broadcast footage of demonstrations in Tirana, Albania, on 24 October to illustrate marches organised in France. CNews presented the footage as showing demonstrators at Porte d’Italie in Paris before acknowledging a «control-room error» and apologising, Libération reports.

About an hour later, FranceInfo showed water cannon filmed in Albania, initially presenting the footage as coming from Lyon. The public broadcaster corrected the information a few minutes later and apologised, according to Le Parisien.

CNews’s mistake happened while several video feeds, including from Paris, Lyon, Nantes and Albania, were arriving at its newsroom simultaneously, journalist Olivier Benkemoun explained. Politicians, including representatives of La France insoumise, asked Arcom to examine the matter.

The mix-ups took place during the demonstrations in France, which were marked by clashes and nearly 1,000 arrests on 25 October, according to authorities cited by the press.
