Clashes broke out at the end of a march in Paris during demonstrations across France on 24 October, while a person was reported seriously injured in Toulouse. Secondary school pupils, students, trade unions and former Yellow Vest protesters are demonstrating, notably in support of public services and purchasing power, according to Agence France-Presse, cited by L’Essentiel.
A demonstration in Paris on Saturday 24 October drew 110,000 people and ended in clashes at Porte de Vincennes, according to the police prefecture, cited by AFP. Police used a water cannon and tear gas after projectiles were thrown as the march dispersed.
The prefecture said this was the only point of tension reported in Paris. In Toulouse, a protester was seriously injured in the hand during clashes, AFP reports.
The 24 October movement brought together, in particular, secondary school pupils and students mobilised to defend public services and purchasing power, as well as trade unions and former Yellow Vest protesters. The day followed a national mobilisation on 17 October, marked by looting and violence in several cities.
The demonstrations took place amid a social crisis in France. Secondary school organisations met Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace on 23 October to demand concrete measures, after several weeks of protests over school resources and the replacement of absent teachers.
