At the Capital Reach Forum held on 26 October in Cotonou, Benin’s president of the Economic and Social Council, Abdoulaye Bio Tchané, argued for better directing savings towards businesses and productive projects. His address focused on the role of the BRVM and persistent difficulties in accessing capital, according to La Nouvelle Tribune.

Abdoulaye Bio Tchané called for savings to be better directed towards businesses and productive projects at the Capital Reach Forum, held in Cotonou on 26 October 2026. The president of Benin’s Economic and Social Council devoted his address to financing the real economy through the West African Regional Stock Exchange (BRVM), according to La Nouvelle Tribune.

He stressed that listed companies remain concentrated in a few sectors and that government bond issues account for a significant share of the market, while private businesses struggle to access stock market financing. This capital could help fund industrial investment, modernise equipment and support commercial expansion.

The BRVM, established in 1998 for the countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union, has already helped mobilise regional savings. Bio Tchané, who took part in its creation, raised the question of the next step: getting businesses to make greater use of capital markets.
