Spanish company Balearia has launched its first fully electric ferry, intended to connect Tangier with Tarifa from summer 2027. The project includes two catamarans and port electrification, with total investment exceeding 200 million euros, according to the company.
Spanish shipping company Balearia announced on Sunday the launch of its first fully electric fast ferry, which is intended to connect Tangier, Morocco, with Tarifa, Spain, from summer 2027. The project represents an investment of more than 200 million euros to build two vessels and electrify the ports of both cities, according to a company statement cited by Aujourd’hui le Maroc.
The two catamarans are expected to operate without direct CO2 emissions or noise pollution. The second vessel, currently under construction, is expected to join the fleet after summer 2027. Balearia presents the project as the first fully electric maritime corridor between Europe and Africa. Its president, Adolfo Utor, said the launch brings the company closer to putting the route into service in 2027.
The first catamaran is 87 metres long, built of aluminium and equipped with batteries with a storage capacity of 14 megawatt-hours. The investment is part of energy and infrastructure projects discussed in Morocco in recent days, including the renewable investments planned by Masen, announced on 26 October.
