Rotimi Amaechi, vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, promises to leave office if Nigeria does not see improvement in the year following a possible accession to power by Atiku Abubakar. He also defends the party’s economic programme, according to his interview with NewsCentral TV.

Rotimi Amaechi, vice-presidential candidate for Nigeria of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has promised to resign if he fails to deliver results during the first year of a possible government led by Atiku Abubakar after the 2027 presidential election. “If I am not performing, I could probably leave the government,” he said in an interview with NewsCentral TV, before confirming that he would resign in that case, according to Punch.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, also said that a government led by Atiku would win the support of Nigerians from its first year. He outlined several ADC economic measures, including a production subsidy intended to enable local refineries to buy crude oil at a price below the international price, on condition that the savings are passed on to pump prices, according to Punch.

On agriculture, Amaechi announced a review of existing policies and increased support for Nigerian farmers to reduce food imports. He linked these investments to job creation, wealth generation and the fight against insecurity, according to Punch.

Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy, as the ADC candidate in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, is also the subject of legal proceedings after a Nigerian court invalidated his candidacy on 5 November.
