Abia activates Ebola isolation centre in Umuahia

Nigeria’s Abia State has activated an isolation centre at Umuahia’s Mother and Child Hospital, although no Ebola cases have been reported there. Governor Alex Otti urged residents to follow protocols without panicking, the Nigerian daily Punch reports.

Nigeria’s Abia State activated an isolation centre for Ebola at the Mother and Child Hospital in Umuahia, although no cases of the disease have been reported there, Governor Alex Otti announced on Friday 30 October during his monthly press briefing. The centre, set up in a recently renovated facility, will not be open to the public unless needed, he said, according to Punch.

Alex Otti urged residents to follow health protocols without giving in to panic. The governor also said that 31,000 people had been screened by the Abia eye health management office and that 1,811 patients had undergone procedures, including 304 free cataract operations.

The state has 25 eye-care centres spread across its 17 local government areas and plans to increase the number to 29 with four newly approved sites, Alex Otti added. The measure is part of the strengthening of hospital isolation in Nigeria announced on 30 October.
