Opposition gubernatorial candidates in north-west Nigeria want to unite to defend the integrity of the 2027 election. Meeting in Kaduna, they denounced political persecution and the shrinking democratic space, Leadership reports.
Opposition gubernatorial candidates in north-west Nigeria have announced plans to strengthen cooperation in response to political pressure and the shrinking political space ahead of the 2027 general elections. They met on Friday in Kaduna under the Gubernatorial Candidates Forum (GCF), Nigerian media outlet Leadership reports.
The forum’s chairman, Muhammad Aminu Abubakar, a candidate for the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), said the parties wanted to defend the credibility of the election and seek a change of government in Kaduna State in 2027. Usman Bawa, a candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), called for regular discussions and better coordination. Candidates from several other parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Labour Party and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), also attended the meeting.
The meeting came as the ADC prepared to launch its campaign in Sokoto State. Its regional chairman, Abdullahi Maigwandu, said the party was overcoming logistical difficulties and had not encountered any security problems. The launch was scheduled for the day after the meeting, according to Leadership.
The mobilisation of opposition parties forms part of the electoral preparations being monitored by Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which approved 41 candidacies and rejected 28, according to a report published on 29 October.
