The funding is to cover food, water, shelter and healthcare in Moyale, according to Tom Fletcher, the UN emergency relief coordinator.
Tom Fletcher, the UN emergency relief coordinator, announced on Friday 6 November the allocation of $3 million from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for humanitarian operations in northern Kenya. Nearly 50,000 people have fled intercommunal violence in southern Ethiopia and crossed the border, according to Kenyans.co.ke.
The funds are to finance emergency interventions in food, water, shelter and healthcare for displaced families. They will notably be mobilised in Moyale, in Marsabit County, where the arrival of refugees is putting pressure on humanitarian resources, according to Kenyans.co.ke.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UNICEF, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the World Food Programme (WFP) had requested 1.1 billion Kenyan shillings, or $8.9 million, on Thursday 5 November to help up to 50,000 people for three months.
The clashes began on 18 October before intensifying on 22 October. Kenya's police chief, Douglas Kanja, announced on 5 November the deployment of additional officers to Moyale to protect residents and their property, while OCHA reported that the situation remained unstable on the Ethiopian side.
