By the AFREEQUE newsroom, based on Tuko
McDonald Mariga, vice-president of the Kenyan Football Federation, has been removed from his position and from the national executive committee along with six other officials. The decision was taken at an extraordinary general meeting in Meru, after clashes and police use of tear gas, according to the federation.
The Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) expelled its vice-president McDonald Mariga and six other members of its national executive committee (NEC) on Saturday 7 November, during an extraordinary general meeting held in Meru. The federation accused them of serious and repeated violations of its statutes and applicable FIFA regulations.
The six other officials concerned are Robert Kenneth Macharia, representing the central region, Bernard Korir Lagat, representing the Upper Rift Valley, Violet Kerubo Momanyi, representing women, Collins Opiyo Kalee, representing Nyanza, Gabriel Mghendi, representing the coast, and Daniel Akala Shikanda, representing Nairobi. Among the grievances cited was an executive committee resolution adopted on 24 April 2026 that sought the departure of FKF president Hussein Mohammed.
The meeting was preceded by tensions at the Three Steers Hotel in Meru. Police officers from the rapid deployment unit fired tear gas into the room where delegates were waiting for proceedings to begin, initially scheduled for 9am. McDonald Mariga arrived under police escort. The former Harambee Stars captain said delegates supporting him had been attacked with stones and prevented from accessing the meeting venue.
The incidents at the Three Steers Hotel had already caused the interruption of the Kenyan federation's meeting by tear gas, before the decision to expel the seven executive committee members.
