Ethiopian minister Bikila Hurisa believes the Medemer philosophy can help African countries combine their resources and capabilities to increase their collective prosperity. He defended the approach at the second African Political Parties Summit in Addis Ababa, according to his statements to the media.

The Ethiopian Medemer philosophy can help African countries combine their individual strengths, overcome their fragmentation and transform their collective potential into shared prosperity, Minister Bikila Hurisa said on the sidelines of the Second African Political Parties Summit in Addis Ababa, according to the Fanamc agency. Bikila Hurisa is coordinator for democratic system building at the Office of the Prime Minister.

He described Medemer as “the philosophy of cooperation, coming together, joining hands, and connecting the past, present and future”, stressing that its application can be adapted to the national realities of each country. According to him, the philosophy has guided Ethiopia’s political, economic and social reforms over the past eight years.

The summit, held under the theme “Governing for growth: political parties as architects of Africa’s economic future”, brings together ruling and opposition parties. Bikila Hurisa said a party’s success is measured by tangible improvements in citizens’ living standards rather than electoral victories. “Governing for growth goes beyond competition, goes beyond an electoral cycle, goes beyond the enjoyment of power,” he said.

This position is part of the Ethiopian authorities’ continued promotion of Medemer: on 29 October, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed presented Medemer as a bridge with Russia.
