UN Horn of Africa envoy Guang Cong praised Ethiopia’s contribution to regional peace, notably through peacekeeping operations, diplomatic efforts and support for dialogue. He also highlighted the Tana Forum, held annually in Bahir Dar, as a platform for discussing regional security issues, according to Fanamc.
The United Nations special envoy for the Horn of Africa, Guang Cong, praised Ethiopia’s role in regional peace and security, citing its peacekeeping operations, diplomatic initiatives and dialogue efforts. He was speaking on 31 October, according to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA).
The diplomat notably presented the Tana Forum, an annual high-level meeting held in Bahir Dar, as a space for discussion among national, regional and international actors on the region’s crises. He also called for respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and the principle of non-interference, as well as stronger African institutions responsible for addressing security challenges.
Regarding Ethiopia’s access to the sea, Guang Cong advocated a settlement through dialogue and negotiations with the countries concerned. He recalled that Addis Ababa had helped, together with neighbouring countries, bring the South Sudanese parties closer before the signing of the revitalised agreement on resolving the conflict in South Sudan, ENA reported. The UN said it was ready to support structured dialogue on the issue.
The statement follows Ethiopia’s call for cooperation to secure the Red Sea on 23 October and Getachew Reda’s request for UN support for Ethiopia’s Tigray on 21 October.
