Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and her daughter Selah Reed, 20, died in a suspected grizzly bear attack near Bella Coola, British Columbia, Canada, their family announced. The two women, who were reported missing on 1 November after going for a walk, were found by BC Conservation Officer Service officers and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, according to the province’s conservation authorities.
Jennifer Balcarras’s remains were discovered on Monday and Selah Reed’s on Tuesday. Evidence found at the scene suggests that an animal may have been involved, but investigators do not yet know whether one or more bears were involved, said Jeff Tyre, an inspector with the BC Conservation Officer Service.
Officers are currently tracking bears in the area. Any animal captured will be assessed and, if identified as responsible for the attack, will be killed in accordance with provincial rules intended to protect the public, according to Jeff Tyre. British Columbia is home to between 10,000 and 13,000 grizzlies, classified as vulnerable by the provincial Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks.
