Twenty Tunisians have arrived on the Italian island of Procida to work as bricklayers under a pilot project for vocational training and regular migration linked to the Mattei Plan for Development. They were recruited by Italian company Anzuino, which provides them with free accommodation, according to Italian news agency Agenzia Nova, cited by La Presse de Tunisie.
The training programme in Tunisia lasted six months and included language classes, workplace safety, technical skills and a 160-hour Format A1 course. The candidates were selected from several hundred applicants, then obtained regular residence permits for salaried work after passing their exams and beginning the visa application process at the Italian embassy in Tunis.
The project is run by Nuove Frontiere Lavoro, an Italian company specialising in employment integration, with Tunisian partners Delta Center, Format and Idee Insieme. Majdi Karoui, its operational manager for Delta Center, said the scheme could be extended to tourism and hospitality to meet Italy’s need for trained staff and encourage skills transfers.
The workers arrived under a scheme reserved for foreign nationals who have completed specific vocational and language training programmes abroad, outside the ordinary Decreto Flussi quotas. The initiative was presented to the municipality of Procida in the presence of local representatives and partner organisations. It follows the publication on 30 October of forecasts for 32,557 public sector recruitments in Tunisia in 2027, amid a broader context in which professional mobility abroad offers Tunisian workers another route to employment.
