Trump makes $5 billion available to support US fishing industry

Donald Trump has announced a voluntary label for seafood caught in the United States and access to more than $5 billion in guaranteed loans to develop its processing. The White House presents these measures as support for the domestic industry, according to its statement.

The Donald Trump administration has made more than $5 billion in guaranteed loans available to develop meat and seafood processing in the United States, according to the White House.

The measure accompanies the “America First Seafood” strategy, unveiled a week earlier, as well as the launch of the voluntary “U.S. Caught Seafood” label to identify seafood caught in the United States. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins presented these initiatives as support for American fishermen, workers and coastal communities, according to the White House.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said environmental and sustainability rules imposed on American fishermen put them at a disadvantage compared with foreign competitors. The government therefore aims to rebuild infrastructure and reopen markets for commercial fishing, according to the same source.
