Several children found nails, screws, staples or needles in sweets collected at Halloween in Germany, and a nine-year-old girl injured her tongue in Bremervörde. Police reported cases in several regions and urged families to remain vigilant, according to German authorities.
Sweets containing nails, screws, needles or metal staples injured or endangered several children in Germany after they collected Halloween sweets, authorities said on Monday. In Bremervörde, in the north of the country, a nine-year-old girl injured her tongue when she bit into a chocolate bar containing a pin at least five centimetres long, according to Rotenburg police.
In Munich, a nine-year-old child spat out a sweet containing a nail without being injured. In Burg, on the island of Fehmarn, an 11-year-old girl found a three-centimetre sewing needle in a chocolate bar. Near Weimar, staples were found in chewing gum collected by two children aged 11 and 12, according to police. Other cases were reported in several regions of the country, where going door to door to ask for sweets has become popular since the 1990s.
