The price of a kilogram of tomatoes is approaching six dinars in Tunisia after production fell, notably because of high temperatures during flowering. Trade Minister Samir Abid expects supplies to improve when new plantations reach maturity, reports Business News.

The price of a kilogram of tomatoes has reached nearly six dinars in Tunisia, amid poorly supplied stalls and sometimes degraded produce. The minister of Trade and Export Development, Samir Abid, attributed the shortage to falling production caused by weather conditions, particularly high temperatures during flowering, according to Business News.

Samir Abid said that the country currently did not have “a single tomato”. His ministry is distributing the quantities still available to limit tensions in the market, while new plantations must reach maturity before supplies return to normal.

The minister was speaking on 5 November during a hearing on the policies and programmes of his department, as part of the review of Tunisia’s 2027 budget bill. Industry professionals had already warned in September of the risk of a severe shortage in November, December and January.
