Police in Nigeria’s Katsina State have arrested three suspects after violence in Yankara, where two vehicles were set alight and several people injured. The incident took place on 31 October amid tensions surrounding a religious procession and the campaign rally of Dikko Radda, according to police cited by Leadership.
The Katsina State Police Command has arrested three suspects after violence in Yankara, in the Faskari Local Government Area of Nigeria. Garba Shu’aibu, 25, Salmanu Ibrahim, 18, and Nazifi Hussaini, 30, are suspected of taking part in the attack, which left several people injured and two vehicles burnt, according to Katsina police spokesperson DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu.
The violence broke out on Saturday 31 October after a dispute between participants in a Maulud procession and security officers over the route. Suspected attackers then blocked the road, threw projectiles, burnt political posters and set fire to a Sharon vehicle belonging to a supporter, as well as a Musa Adamu Network (MAN) vehicle. Police said their intervention dispersed the crowd and restored calm. They are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and find other suspects who are on the run.
The incident is part of a series of outbreaks of violence linked to gatherings of the APC, the party of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, and its supporters. It follows violence that injured Dikko Umaru Radda supporters in Funtua on 28 October, followed by the arrest of 14 suspects after an attack on an APC convoy, announced on 29 October.
