Western Cape police arrested three men aged 25 to 30 in Mfuleni on Thursday in connection with an investigation into the murder of a minibus taxi driver and attempted murder linked to taxi violence in Cape Town. The suspects were arrested with four 9 mm pistols and 147 rounds of ammunition, said provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg.
According to Wesley Twigg, officers on foot patrol in Ngubelani Street noticed the three men trying to evade them. The search then led police to a crime scene, where they found the body of a 34-year-old taxi driver, shot dead in his vehicle. A woman injured in the attack was taken to hospital.
Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Sizakhele Dyantyi welcomed the arrests and the seizure of the weapons. He said operations would be conducted during taxi travel times and urged passengers and motorists to be patient, as the operations could lengthen their journeys.
The three suspects are due to appear before Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Monday. They face charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of firearms and ammunition without a licence, reports IOL. The arrests come amid deadly shootings targeting taxi drivers in Cape Town, covered in an earlier article on three drivers killed in Cape Town shootings.
