Thierry Henry, a former France international and Arsenal legend, will attend the Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium on Saturday 31 October. Betway, sponsor of the South African Premiership, confirmed his attendance in a statement reported by TimesLIVE.
The former striker will meet fans and present the prize to the winner of the ‘S’bonise & Win’ campaign, which rewards supporters who display their team’s colours and kit, according to Betway. His appearance is part of the ‘96-26’ commemorative campaign launched by the Premier Soccer League to celebrate 30 years of South African football.
Henry won the World Cup with France in 1998 and played for Arsenal from 1999 to 2006. He said he wanted to experience the atmosphere at FNB Stadium and meet the supporters who give the derby its special character, according to Betway.
The event comes two days after Orlando Pirates’ 3-0 league victory over Milford. The club nevertheless remains criticised after the match, as reported in Orlando Pirates beat Milford 3-0 but remain criticised.
